A Latte With Journalism on the Side

Several coffee shops set to open next month in the Czech Republic plan to offer more than the usual array of cafe services. As they sip their drinks, visitors will also be able to surf the Web, get help in building social networking profiles or even chat with reporters working right next door putting together their local newspapers.

The newsrooms-cum-cafes are part of a new venture in so-called hyperlocal journalism, which aims to reconnect newspapers with readers and advertisers by focusing on neighborhood concerns at a neighborhood level: think garbage collection schedules, not Group of 7 diplomacy.

Google News可以算是一种新闻模式的创新,ohmynews.com、digg.com也是。twiqqer.com也讲是。

New Search Tool Aims at Answering Tough Queries, but Not at Taking on Google

WolframAlpha, a powerful newservice that can answer a broad range of queries, has become one of the most anticipated Web products of the year. But its creator, Stephen Wolfram, wants to make something clear: Despite the online chatter comparing it to Google, his service is not intended to dethrone the king of search engines.

ebay bank!

How to Manage Your Reputation Online

Use your name to register your own Web site. I would also recommend a sub domain and a blog, again using your real name. Wordpressand LiveJournal both have high Google PageRanks. Look into how to use title tags and headers to further optimize your results. Almost without exception, your Web site will show up as the first result in your name search.

Piggyback off web sites whose pages rank high in Google. Social networking sites are great for this. FacebookMySpaceLinkedInYouTube,FlickrNaymzTumblrTwitterStumbleUponVimeoFriendFeed and Ningare great places to start. You don’t have to actively use these sites. Simplypark your profile, add the necessary amount of content and make sure to adjust the settings to public view where appropriate so that your profile can be crawled and indexed by Google

To Tweet or Not to Tweet

In a droll nod to shifting technology, there’s a British red telephone booth in the loftlike office that you are welcome to use but you’ll have to bring in your cellphone.

I was here on a simple quest: curious to know if the inventors of Twitter were as annoying as their invention. (They’re not. They’re charming.)

ME: You say the brevity of Twitter enhances creativity. So I wonder if you can keep your answers to 140 characters, like Twitter users must. Twitter seems like telegrams without the news. We now know that on the president’s trip to Trinidad, ABC News’s Jake Tapper’s shower was spewing brown water. Is there any thought that doesn’t need to be published?

BIZ: The one I’m thinking right now.

Software That Guards Virtual Playgrounds

When one site blocked the word “love,” Ms. Marshall says, the children substituted the word “glove.”

Such ingenuity is one reason that technology alone will never provide enough protection, she says. “Kids will find a way to communicate,” she says, “and you can’t block every word in the dictionary.”

Technologists agree with her. “There’s no silver bullet from a technical standpoint to do this,” says Mr. Smith at Keibi. “This is about helping humans to make a decision about whether there is a problem.”

以及smartout.cn。

Study Shows First-Time Online Donors Often Do Not Return

People who go online to donate to charity for the first time often do not return to the Internet to make later gifts, according to a newstudy examining the experience of 24 nonprofit groups.

The findings suggest that while the Internet can be a valuable fund-raising tool for charities, particularly in soliciting gifts after disasters like Hurricane Katrina, it is not a replacement for direct mail or other forms of fund-raising.

“Online giving is higher than offline giving, and the demographics of online givers are more attractive — better educated, higher income,” said Tobias Smith, director of online communications at CARE, which took part in the study and works on issues faced by poor women. “But how you get people to routinely give online is a nut no one has yet cracked.”

The study was done by Target Analytics, a unit of Blackbaud Inc., which provides software and services to nonprofit groups.

On the Web, No One Can Hear You Scream

I can see this from the side of the Web companies. Internet business are built on scale, making a little bit of money by doing something for millions ofpeople in an automated way. Once a human being needs to actually talk to ahuman being, the profits (if any) from that customer may be gone forever.

direct market
